FAQ's

I have never done Pilates before - will I be able to join in?
At Bodywork-Pilates we offer classes to suit all levels of ability - from Pilates Preliminaries, designed for the complete novice through to intermediate/advanced. We are happy to discuss any concerns you may have prior to joining the classes.

I have a back problem - will Pilates help me?
If you have any sort of joint or medical issue, you should always check with your doctor or specialist before embarking on any new exercise programme. However, Pilates is recognised as being of particular benefit to many back issues. By using and developing the strength of the deep abdominal muscles, the supportive spinal muscles, the muscles of the pelvic floor and the stabilising muscles of the upper back and shoulder area, you will learn to correct your posture, reduce strain and stress and realign the body. Your back will get stronger and your pain will gradually reduce. Many osteopaths, physiotherapists and doctors now recognise the benefits of Pilates based exercises and recommend the technique to their own patients.

I'm pregnant - can I do Pilates?
Once again, do check with your midwife or doctor that there is no reason why you should not exercise and remember that this is not a time to get fit. At Bodywork-Pilates we recommend that, regardless of your fitness level, you should join the Pilates Preliminaries or Pilates Level 1 classes. These classes are designed for the new exerciser and for those who need a gentler approach to the technique. The classes are kept to a maximum of 10-12 people and we can be sure that the level is appropriate for your condition.

How can I be sure that the instructor I get will be safe?
At Bodywork-Pilates all of our instructors are qualified and insured in their chosen discipline. Ongoing training to update knowledge and technique is common.
We keep classes to a maximum of 12 to ensure that your instructor is able to observe everyone - larger classes may mean that your instructors attention is too thinly spread and potential problems and poor technique can be missed. At Bodywork-Pilates, we will put extra classes on the timetable rather than overload existing classes.

How often should I do Pilates?
As with any exercise technique or regime - the more often you practise, the more quickly you will become proficient. But more important than the amount of Pilates you do, is the technique you apply. Pilates is very easy to do badly and much more difficult to do well.
Pilates will hopefully become a part of your everyday life, something that you will incorporate into your day without even realising it. However, at Bodywork-Pilates we recommend, time and finances permitting, that you should aim to do 2-3 sessions per week.
You may also wish to consider personal training. By working 1-2-1 or 1-2-2 with a Bodywork-Pilates instructor, whether in matwork or on studio equipment such as the Pilates Reformer, you will get individual attention and therefore will see quicker results for your efforts.

Do I have to be a member?
Absolutely not. We welcome non-members at all of our classes. You can pay on a 'pay as you go basis' the first time you attend and then buy a block booking of classes and benefit from a block booking discount or join as a member of the studio which offers even better value for money. We don't mind as long as you come along, enjoy and achieve.

I've heard that Pilates is expensive. Is it?
At Bodywork-Pilates we try to offer the very best service at the very best price.
Your 1st Pilates session will cost £6.00, with a block booking of 10 sessions costing only £52.50 - a significant saving. 1-2-1 personal training is £35.00 per session with discounts offered for blocks of 5 or 10 sessions.
We feel that at Bodywork-Pilates you will benefit from the only fully equipped specialist studio in Chester at a very fair price. We don't do anything else - this is our passion and our expertise and we feel that our clients appreciate the time, effort and investment that is shiningly obvious as soon as they walk through the door.

What happens if I buy a block of classes and then miss one?
At Bodywork-Pilates we don't penalise people for having a life crisis.
We ask that blocks of 5 sessions are used within 6 weeks and blocks of 10 are used within 12. These times can be extended with prior notice. That way illness, work commitments, holidays and all those other unforseeable circumstances won't cost you a pre-paid session.
We only ask that cancellations are made in good time as a courtesy. This allows someone else to join the class. However, no-shows and cancellations of less than 1 hour prior to the session start time will be penalised.
